Brave Exvius is a turn-based role-playing game that uses elements from the Final Fantasy series and Brave Frontier, which in turn emulates their combat system from the Valkyrie Profile. Similar to these games, the battle system consists of a simplified interface that allows players to command their characters to attack by touching their corresponding attack buttons. Special attacks, items, or defenses can be used by swiping the button and selecting the desired command.

Players progress through a series of stages in the dungeon until they encounter and defeat the final boss while gaining experience points, crafting materials, and money. Another new feature of the game compared to Brave Frontier is the ability to explore towns and explore dungeons through classic RPG-style touch controls, which allow the player to talk to and interact with people, which sometimes allows the player to complete certain quests.

The game also uses elements from the Final Fantasy series, such as magic spells, character-specific extreme bursts and superpower summons. These characters are presented in a pixel art style. As part of the game's Twister system, players can summon characters from other Final Fantasy games, which players can use to assemble a party of five units. Players can use the buddy system to bring an additional unit into battle. By adding others to a player's buddy list, they can select a buddy's shared unit before entering the dungeon.
