"There's a ton of stuff to do which is what gives Payback 2 such a fun atmosphere" - Super Game of Droid
Payback 2 includes everything from tank battles to high-speed heliport races to huge gang battles - but you really have to try to get a feel for how much variety there is, and we're adding more of it all the time!
Payback 2 has a single player "story" mode consisting of multiple chapters, each with the usual goal of having the player complete a mission to get enough money to complete the chapter and unlock the next chapter. The player receives a mission when a pay phone rings, and the "boss" instructions are given through an accomplice. Mission instructions include a variety of crimes, such as assassination or robbery. Players can also gain money through activities such as vandalizing vehicles and killing pedestrians. After committing a crime, the player must avoid being arrested or killed by the police, SWAT, or military. [citation needed]
Payback 2's "campaign" mode consists of multiple "episodes", each of which consists of a variety of solo or team activities against or with AI characters. Some of these events include: "Brawl," where the goal is to kill the most opponents; "Gang War," which is really a "brawl" but with two teams; and "Capture the Swag", which mimics the outdoor game Capture the Flag; "Conquest", in which players must acquire part of the map; and "Master Pin" which is similar to "Conquest"; "Race", where players race against AI characters driving various vehicles on different routes on different maps; and "Sprint", which is actually "Race", but with shorter routes; and "Elimination", which is similar to "Race", but the last player is eliminated in an interval.
Payback 2's multiplayer mode allows players to create and configure multiplayer versions of the above event types, which are hosted on one of four proprietary game servers of their choice. After the first round, players can vote between two randomly generated configurations for the next match. Private multiplayer matches are created in the same way, and creators can share the four-character-long "short code" required to join with anyone they want to play with. Upon completion of a public or private match, players will receive a certain amount of "XP" based on the results. [citation needed]
The music used in Payback 2's startup transitions is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Requiem Mass in D minor - Lacrimosa dies illa.
